UNESWA SHOULD BE MORE CONSIDERATE

Sir,

When the University of Eswatini (UNESWA) management issued a statement to the effect that registration for the current semester would be reopened effective  June 1, 2020 this year, I became ecstatic; particularly because as a self-sponsored student I had to pay only E2 500 and proceed with online registration, with the settlement of whatever balance to be made before the commencement of the end of semester examinations.  One found this a reasonable and considerate gesture from the institution, in these trying times.

Registered

Like most of my self-sponsored colleagues, who had not yet registered before the university was closed  in March, I duly paid the stipulated amount and proceeded to begin the online registration process which I, however, failed to complete.  Upon enquiry, I was told that I was not allowed to continue with the process because I owed the university a certain amount of money from the previous semester.  Appalled, I called some of my colleagues and discovered that they were experiencing the same problem.  This left us dejected because we had understood the university statement to mean that upon payment of the E 2500, one would be allowed to proceed with the registration process and pay all monies owed to the institution before the commencement of the end of semester examinations.

Raise

Now, with registration closing on Friday, June 5, 2020, we find it impossible to raise the amounts demanded by the university within the remaining time, other than the E2 500 which we have already paid.

COVID-19 caught us all unawares and our financial plans had to be revisited due to its devastating effects and uncertainties.  Much as we appreciate the university management’s understanding in allowing us to proceed with the registration process after the payment of only E2 500, we believe that they can bend the financial regulations a little much more to accommodate even more of us, without necessarily bringing the institution’s machinery to a halt.

We kindly request the institution’s management to be even more considerate and allow us to complete the registration process upon the mandatory payment of E2 500, notwithstanding outstanding previous semester fees but ensure that we don’t sit for our end of semester examinations before we make full settlements of all outstanding fees, as per the presumed spirit of the institution’s recent press statement on same.  Alternatively, we request that the registration period is extended to the end of June or early July this year to allow us more time to raise the required amounts. We can’t afford to suspend our studies due to failure to meet the registration period deadline

.
I trust that the ever understanding and supportive university management will not fail us on this issue.
Worried self-sponsored student
