CHANGE YOUR REALITY

Sir,

Marcus Aurelius once said: “Today I escaped anxiety. Oh no, I discarded it, because it was within me, in my own perceptions, not outside.” Perception can be defined as the way we understand something.

It is a position, attitude or interpretation of events. It determines the way you respond to given stimulus. Your perception in life is determined by your past experiences, values, beliefs and overall psychological make-up. In short, your perception is your reality. It is the way you see the world. It is your life. However, you can change your perception. And if you change your perception, you change your reality, and in turn, you change your life.

Determine

We all can create our own perception, which goes on to determine what we observe. Although I must say it is also true that two people can observe the exact same things, have different opinions and interpretations, and both be right. So what does that mean and what does it have to do with your life? Think about the way you deal with your adversity. Think about the way you deal with a different opinion. More importantly, how do you perceive yourself? Are you a problem solver? Are you too hard on yourself? Are you in control of your emotions? Are you always positive?

Changing

The good news is, if you work on changing your perception, you will deal with all of life’s issues in a more empowering way. This is because we always act, feel and perform in accordance with what we imagine to be true about ourselves and our environment. Imagination sets the goal ‘picture’ which our subconscious works on.

We act, or fail to act, not because of ‘will’, as is commonly believed, but because of imagination, our perception. If we see ourselves as unworthy of making a lot of money, we will act in a way to ensure we do not, even if we verbalise that we do. Whether you succeed in life or not has very little to do with our intelligence but it has everything to do with what you think of yourself.

I believe if you can understand yourself, you can do more for yourself as an individual than anything else. The good thing is that we can take a blemished self-image and breathe life into it.

We can iron out the creases, and infuse colour and beauty into it. The question will be how? First you need to be aware. Be able to gauge when your perception is creating problems. You need to feel it, see it and then prepare to modify it. After that, create an open mind. Mentally view all options and ask yourself, how can I view this issue differently? Be open to suggestions. Most importantly, you should know that you are much more creative than you think, and you should use that.

Tell yourself that there are no problems but only challenges. Create something relevant and empowering to you, and repeat it every morning and every night with an exciting tone. Feel it, believe it and become energised by it. Over time this practice will modify your innate beliefs. Change your perception today and change your reality forever.
