BURY YOUR PAST, AWAKEN YOUR INNER GIANT IN 2019

Sir,

The immeasurable value of family, the historical baggage of social injustices, and the formation and preservation of identity are what create the social fabric.

Even though these elements have a significant impact on our lives, they have an origin and are back-grounded by events of the past. So in a life altering choice of traveling to the past or fixing your present, the past may seem comparatively the better option.

Firstly, ladies and gentlemen, we are all vulnerable to emotional heartbreak when it comes to our families. Every person who is reading this, at some point in their lives, has had a relative, friend or colleagues being knocked down by what I call death; and I am no different. In your endeavors to travel to the past, your objective would probably not be to reverse the deaths of family members but to get a chance to intensely embrace those last moments.

Most of us are just souls craving and yearning for five more minutes of closure; where I can be with the lost loved ones and relive those moments. You believe that your progression in life after this opportunity would provide you with a sense of peace because you would be contempt with the last experiences with family members; appreciating their presence and allowing for reconciliation while they were still alive.

Atrocities

Secondly, the major atrocities experienced by our society such as the slavery of black people and the apartheid regime in South Africa have a great degree of societal awareness. Since these horrible historical events were ignited in the past, the only way to fully eradicate them and eliminate the ripple effects is by going to the past. This allows us to uproot the social injustices we currently face and permanently erase their existence. Comparatively, going to the future is futile since the very problems we try to escape from could potentially still exist and remain ingrained in the fabric of society; making the future a lot less pleasurable.

If we were to know the struggles of the past and have access to first-hand experiences; we would most likely increase and intensify our appreciation of those social struggles. Moreover, we will learn more about our social identities, as travelling to the past would help you experience events like your country’s independence and help you understand your culture and identity. This would make you a prouder citizen in society.

But enough of the fantasy, let’s dive into reality. Ladies and gentlemen, we have no power to travel to the past and reconcile with lost loved ones, to reverse social injustices or even relive historical moments.

The fact is in 2018 you couldn’t built your dream house, you didn’t get a promotion at work and yes you didn’t manage your finances well but 2019 is your chance to protrude from all negativity. That is why I challenge you not to let your past define you; rather work on being great today. People are going to look at you and say you cannot achieve certain things but look them in the eye and tell them ‘I can and I will’.

Awaken that inner giant and refuse to be a victim of the past. Tap into your potential and bring out a better you. I believe in you lies the next minister, lawyer, writer, journalist or leader.
