HARD WORKING COPS MUST BE HONOURED

“I think the police are modern day heroes. I think they are here to protect us...” - Cuba Gooding jr.
The heroic act by the police officer, who rescued a drowning child from a Pigg’s Peak Hotel swimming pool late last year, by quickly and timely applying CPR (Cardiopulmonary resuscitation - a lifesaving act of a series of compressions on a victim’s chest, whose heart may have stopped in what is called cardiac arrest), needs to be applauded and he deserves a medal of bravery from his superiors at the police service.

My apologies for taking so long to write about this heroic act.
A writer’s job is a complex one, but I would not have let this heroic act pass, without writing about it. God forbid, no!
They walk a very thin line - I have said it numerous times in the past articles – that is our men in blue. A thin line of satisfying an ever demanding and rarely satisfied public by arresting criminals, and seeing to it that a conviction is successfully achieved in the courts.

At the same time, they are famous for brutality where minimum force would have sufficed. I have said it in the past that, I sincerely believe those famous for brutality are the rogue elements - a few who have taken the police profession as a means to an end, that is, of getting a salary at the end of the month, period.

infamous Zavale incident

I have no time for these. History will judge them for allegedly brutalising suspects, some who ended up dying. The infamous Zavale incident comes to mind.
He was a Mozambican hustler, plying his trade mostly at the busy bus terminus and was allegedly caught on the wrong side of the law, suspected of having stolen an electronic gadget.

I am not into reviving or evoking sad memories, but the intention of this letter is to applaud those good cops who have made policing a choice, a calling. These are our heroes. These are the men in blue, who leave their wives and children for duty, wear the badge and not knowing if they will come to the warm embrace of their families at the end of their shift.

These are our heroes who deserve our fullest support. These are the heroes who venture into the unknown to bring to book human predators who have made our streets unsafe.

By all means, let us support these unsung heroes and not only berate their bad acts, but give credit where it is due.Mr. Acting National Commissioner, how about recognising such heroes as the swimming pool cop, by giving or awarding them with medals?

Not forgetting the other heroes in the police diving department, who risk their lives by diving into crocodile-infested rivers to search for and retrieve bodies of drowned victims or those attacked by crocodiles?
I say it here and now that SALUTE bafowethu. Keep up the good work! Shalom!
