WPC GRADUATES WELL EQUIPPED

 Sir,

I form part of a prominent class of 2018 that graduated at the oldest and diligent institution, William Pitcher College (WPC). Allow me to begin by congratulating my fellow colleagues for a successful year we’ve had, and further wish them greener pastures as they await posts from the Teaching Service Commission, hopefully as early as January 2019.

In a world where there are continuous advancements in technology and educational systems, mainly due to the rise of issues and challenges that affect teaching and learning in schools, there is a great need for special educators with special knowledge.
We, WPC graduates, unlike many who precede us from the college, hold special skills and qualities that are going to intensify the level of education in the country, if given the opportunity to do so.

When we were admitted in 2015, we were the first group to come across the Psycho Social Support (PSS) course. This course is studied throughout all six semesters, and holds a special research project for individual reviews based on social issues faced by pupils in different schools. It a course anticipated to equip educators with knowledge on social issues which affect pupils’ learning.

It goes on to furnish the educators with means that can be used to deal with these challenges, in order to ensure all pupils, despite their social settings, benefit from being at school. We are specially trained to assist pupils deal with issues they come across in and outside school.

Bullying

These include bullying, peer pressure, abuse and poverty among others. These issues cause a serious strain in teaching and learning at schools in the country.
Moreover, most people are aware of the Ministry of Education’s mandate to upgrade our educational system from Objective-Based Education (OBE) to Competency-Based Education (CBE).

For someone who is not familiar with these terms, the main difference between OBE and CBE is that the former focuses mainly on accomplishment of a lesson objective in any subject taught in schools, while the latter’s main focus are the pupils than the lesson objectives.

In CBE, pupils control their learning, and they only need assistance from special educators to reach their competencies, such as guiding them through the objectives of a particular lesson. We, the class of 2018, are ready for such a task, because we are confident we are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to ensure the commencement of CBE is achievable.

I was thrilled by the remarks made by ministry’s principal secretary during our graduation ceremony. The teaching profession is one of the most important, and it is time it is recognised. Doctors, nurses, pilots, accountants and more all pass through the patient hand of a teacher, she said emphatically. We were really honoured by her presence. We now wait in anticipation for means to be done by our government to upgrade the teaching profession, especially where remuneration is concerned.
