THE LORD’S DAY, SABBATH

Sir,

John the revelator tells us; “I was in the spirit on the Lord’s day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet,” Rev 1:10. However this text, does not shed more light as to which day is being referred to as the Lord’s day. In order to find out more, we need to look into the Bible both old and new testaments to find out more verses pertaining to the subject. It is of paramount importance to have scriptural support for every Christian practice that we follow since we know that ‘all scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness’, 2 Timothy 3:16.

Throughout scripture the Sabbath (Saturday) is called God’s ‘holy day’. If we revisit the creation story the Bible tells us that in six days God created the heaven and earth and all that is in them. “And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had made; and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it He had rested from all His work which God created and made,” Genesis 2: 2,3. The Lord Jesus has a day and that day is the Sabbath. God says; “Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God,” Exodus 20: 8-10.

Through the Prophet Isaiah, God speaks of the Sabbath and calls it plainly ‘my holy day’. The Lord says; “If you turn away your foot from the Sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the Sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words: Then shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it,” Isaiah 58:13, 14. These old testament texts plainly tells us that the Lord’s Day is the Sabbath and this day was given to mankind to be a sign of God’s people. “Moreover I also gave them my Sabbaths, to be a sign between me and them, that they might know that I am the Lord that sanctify them,” Ezekiel 20:12. And nowhere in scripture does He designate another day as His.

The New Testament tells us more about the Sabbath being the Lord’s day. In Matthew, Jesus says; “The Son of man is Lord even of the Sabbath day.” In Luke Jesus said the Son of man was ‘Lord of the Sabbath’. “For He spoke in a certain place about the seventh day in this manner. There remains, therefore, Sabbath-keeping for the people of God,” Heb. 4:4-9. The Bible does not say there remains Sabbath-keeping for the Jews. But it says; “There remains Sabbath-keeping for the people of God.” The people of God include the Gentiles as well as the Jews (I Pet. 2:10; Eph. 2:11-13). Dear reader, the Lord’s Day, God’s holy Sabbath day, is the seventh day of the week, which is Saturday. God made the Sabbath for man (Mark 2:28), not only for the Jews. It was God’s plan that His children observe the seventh day as the memorial of His creative power (Exodus 20:8-11).
