HIGHER INSTITUTIONS IGNORANT

Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font

Sir,

We turn a blind eye on private institutions robbing students in broad daylight. What is the Ministry of Education and Training doing to curb this corruption and or ignorance? In some institutions, students are not allowed to come with gowns from outside. You cannot inherit a gown from your cousin but you have to solely buy it from the school. If you can’t buy it, you are expected to pay rent at it for a fee, which is returnable but too exorbitant. For me that is a corrupt practice right under the nose of the ministry. Some students are self-sponsored, so buying a gown or renting it becomes a high mountain to climb and the best possible solution would be to borrow the gown from their brothers and sisters.

These institutions allow only two relatives of the student to enter the graduation arena. Imagine, I am being sponsored by my cousin who has a wife while both my parents are alive. Now the question becomes who among the two sets will attend my graduation. We are used to having our workmates and bosses coming to support us during graduation events. I hope any official from the ministry or from one of the private institutions will read my letter and see if amendments can be made. This is very selfish and ignorant, and some high schools have copied the same ignorance. These institutions keep increasing application fees and government does not call them to order. Imagine again you are a student from Londunduma and your parent is a garden boy and your mother is a kitchen girl and you are charged E450 for just applying. I swear, many people do not go to these institutions because of the exorbitant application fees. And these fees seem to be escalating with each academic year. I urge the Ministry of Education to help us scrap the application fees unless they are justified.
