WELCOME MINISTER ‘MADZE’

Sir,

As the country’s political landscape takes a new dimension following the appointment of Cabinet ministers, one cannot resist the temptation of penning a piece apropos the current state of affairs.

As a sports enthusiast, allow me to focus on the newly-appointed Minister of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs, Harries ‘Madze’ Bulunga; a man who does not need an introduction in local football circles.

Bulunga, the Mbabane East legislator, just like his predecessor in this ministry, ‘Cruiser’ Ngcamphalala, is a passionate sports person who has been given the huge task of leading a ministry responsible for the development of sports, among other responsibilities.

Task

In his maiden political journey, ‘Cheu’, as the soften spoken legislator is sometimes referred to, is faced with an arduous task of leading this portfolio towards Vision 2022 and beyond.

As someone who has been in sports, especially football, I have confidence in Bulunga’s capabilities; from the days he used to don the much adored Umbelebele FC jersey, mesmerising defenders with his football skills, to the times when he began his coaching career and led our national team, Sihlangu, to greater heights.
From the brief encounters I had with him, I can attest that in the social life, Bulunga eats and breathes football.

And of course, the moment he decided to venture into politics, thus winning the election race, we were brought to another dimension of thinking in as far as sports representation in Parliament is concerned; that sports issues will get the much needed attention.

Confidence

However, the gist of this letter is not to put the honorable minister under immense pressure, but my intention is to welcome and also remind him that as sports people we have confidence in him.

I am sure by now he doesn’t need to be reminded that the sporting fraternity consists of various codes, which all need his attention.
In essence, as sports people we have to also admit that, in as much as we expect our minister to deliver, we shouldn’t expect things to change overnight, for he is not a magician.

We have to consider the fact that this portfolio is not only responsible for sports, but also another important responsibility for culture and youth affairs.
With this on his shoulders, plus the Mbabane East folk, it goes without saying that Bulunga’s journey will not be a walk in the park; hence there is dire need for us to practice patience.

Blunders

And I am sure the minister will not be buoyed by the wild celebrations that erupted the moment he was announced the man to be at the helm of this ministry, and ending up making blunders all in the name of pleasing everyone.
Sports need you, the youth need you and culture needs you. Here is advice from me, a matured and aspiring entrepreneur; know your mandate and do things according to book.

Philosopher John Maxwell once said; “Anyone can steer the ship, but it takes a leader to chart the course. Leaders who are good navigators are capable of taking their people just about anywhere,” I rest my case.
