OPEN LETTER TO MP MAKHOSI VILAKATI

Sir,

I heard you speaking at Sibaya on Saturday, October 26, presenting your views on the issue of government scholarships (again). Honourable MP, I wonder if you are aware that our parents sacrificed a lot of things to take us to these private schools.

My siblings and I are being raised by a single parent (mother), she took us through these schools by applying for loans. My elder brother got a bursary which will take him up to Form V. Does it mean that after this he will stay at home because government scholarships are not meant for children who attended private schools? Isn’t the government scholarships programme meant for all Eswatini students?

My mum has been paying PAYE for the past 55 years and she is still paying but now we are not benefitting from the programme.
Honourable MP, kindly do not punish us for the sacrifices our parents have made for us. When I say us, I mean the hundreds of pupils who attended/attend private schools through our parents’ sacrifices or bursaries. Instead, help level the playing field and help the youth of Eswatini achieve the King’s Vision 2022 through receiving university government scholarships, regardless of which schools they attended.

I would like to, however, state and suggest a simple solution. Every pupil applying for a government scholarship should attach their parents’ payslips, after which the percentage of government funding would be calculated making the scholarships need based, with all Eswatini nationals benefitting.
