OPEN LETTER TO NEW MINISTER OF WORKS

Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font

 Sir,

I wrote this with the intention that it might, hopefully, catch the attention of the incoming minister of Public Works. Perhaps, he/she would be in a position to alleviate some of the horrible conditions being currently experienced along the so-called tar road from the junction of the Big Bend – Manzini road to the Lukhula junction, a distance of approximately 40km.

We, the residents on either side of this important link road from Durban to Nelspruit and to the Mozambique border, have over several years endured the constant deterioration of the road surface, leaving us, currently, with many hundreds of potholes, ranging from massive, down to football size.

Negotiating these hazards is both time consuming and extremely expensive on general wear and tear on vehicles, particularly tyres and suspension. One is also left wondering what the occupants of transient foreign vehicles might think of their harrowing experience once having travelled this short stretch of road. Of one thing I am certain, this busy strategic road is no good advertisement for our wonderful country.

Rumours of the imminent re-tarring of the road are awash and I was wondering whether the new minister would consider, in his/her wisdom, that a gravel road be constructed adjacent to the tar road for the entire length of the proposed construction, before the commencement of tarring.
This action would provide an instant and massive alleviation of the torturous necessity of continued travel along the long deceased tar surface.

Without seeming to be over dramatic, the condition of this road is dangerous and puts the lives of motorists and travelers at risk. Accidents have already occurred, including a fatal one, directly as a consequence of the state of this road. Road safety along this road has become a major concern. I respectfully request that an hour’s time of an inspection-in-loco by a senior member of the minister’s office would be well spent. We hope and pray for decisive action from our government.

T Purcell
