TEACHERS CANNOT DO IT ALONE

Sir,

There is an adage that says, ‘one cannot wash dirty clothes with dirty water as it will make them worse’.
The culture of learning and teaching has lost the dignity it once had. However, we still have excellent, dedicated, committed and self-respected teachers out there who can take pride in their profession.

Their input in the profession becomes worthless if parents do not enforce discipline at home. Raising a responsible child has to be a collective responsibility and collective effort between parents and teachers.

If parents do not play their part, teaching their children becomes a difficult task. When teachers discipline children today, they face a lot of challenges. We cannot run away from the fact that today’s children are naughty and disrespectful, which is why when they are disciplined by teachers they regard it as harsh and abusive.

Some of our parents do not even bother to open their children’s school books and monitor how they are performing. This is because they just tell themselves that teachers will do all the work.

Also, there are some parents who do not even know their children’s class teachers and you wonder why this is so. It is not good for parents to leave everything to teachers and not even help with homework.

Those parents whose children get punished for breaking school rules confront the teachers, instead of investigating if their children are behaving in the right manner.
Imagine meeting your child’s teacher for the first time towards the end of the year, when you should have made effort to meet her when the year began. If we cannot discipline our children at home, we must know that teachers will also fail or struggle to call them to order in the classroom.

Many young people with bad attitudes and behaviour develop them at a young age because no one condemns their actions. I do believe that together, parents and teachers can raise responsible young people who will make a meaningful difference in the country.

It is really disheartening that there are still parents who think that teachers should do all the work. For parents to refuse to accept the role that they have to play in grooming their children for the future, is totally wrong and it must come to an end. Also, we need to remember that the teachers are also human and do need guidance and advise apart from the policies and rules that guide their profession.
