WHY ARE WOMEN NOT VOTING FOR EACH OTHER?

Sir,

Over the past few years our King has come out to encourage women to vote for other women into important positions . Non-goverment organasations have done excellent work in advocating  that women stand up and take big positions. Songs have been composed ,with the Slogan “Khetsa Make,’’  and I had high hopes going into these elections that women will finally see another woman as a leader and they will vote for women .

I attended the Buganu Ceremony at Hlane, the slogan ‘Khetsa Make’ was heard from corner to corner such that my friend Stuks. joined them ‘Sikhetsa make lonyaka, lonyaka ngulonyaka, tsine singuMshadza,’ he sang along and I joined him . Inside me I was happy that women had finally realised that they needed  to stand up and be counted .

I had the priviledge to attend the elections as an observer though not official in one of the umphakatsi around the Hhohho region. Women had came in numbers and they were all seated and ready to take the bull by its horns in the election, at least that’s what I thought.

One woman had a chance to nominate and my fingers were crossed that she nominates another woman. My heart skipped a beat or two,  the woman finally shouted; “I nominate Make Shabangu”, she said and Make Shabangu was called to the stand and asked , if she stands for elections or not , bodly she says yes, I stand for elections.

Now it was time to second the nomination, I couldn’t believe it. No woman seconded the nomination, only two male figures raised their hands unfortunately 10 people were required to second the nomination.

I stood there dejected and I couldn’t believe it, why women were not supporting their own? I asked myself have we done enough in teaching women to stand up and be counted? Why are women not supporting one another? What needs to be done for women to finally see that they are capable as men in everything. I hope women going forward will stand up and be counted. Sikhetsa Make Lonyaka.
