EMASWATI SHOULD VOTE WISELY

Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font

Sir,

I believe that in every mistake there is a lesson to be learnt. It is painful when someone stands up during a community meeting and claim to have done this and that when in actual fact it is a lie.

People have a tendency of baking in the glory of others by appearing as if they have done something when it is not the case.
We have been struggling all these years as most of us do not have jobs, water and food, yet we have politicians who we elected with the hope that they would help in making our lives better.

We have MPs who will be trying their luck again in the national elections yet it is clear that they did not help us in any way.
We have seen it in the past, where during the campaigning period, the same useless politicians lure us with food parcels, blankets and other things and dupe us into believing that they are capable of representing us well.

It becomes sad when two years down the line we discover that actually, these people do not have our best interests at heart.
That is why I hope one day we will be allowed to recall them if we see that they are not helping us in any way.
As I write this letter, I am bitter because I feel betrayed by people who have been given the privilege to look out for the electorate but in the end they did the opposite and only cared for themselves

It is good that His Majesty has already dissolved Parliament, and this means that the onus is now on us the electorate to ensure that we do not elect people just because they delivered food parcels in our community.

We need to elect people who will represent us in a fair and transparent manner. Being an MP should not just be about enriching yourself and flying to different countries to attend workshops. You have to represent the people who helped you win that Parliamentary seat.
We may be poor but all of us have bright minds, which means we can easily see a person who is not capable of representing us well in Parliament.

The Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC) has done its part by visiting many communities in the four regions of the country to educate on how to elect the right candidates.

Let us use what we have learnt from those workshops by EBC and use it wisely. If we do not take action, no one will do so on our behalf. We know that already some people are spending money in bars buying booze for people because they want them to vote for them, that is not how it is done? Why should you vote for someone because he or she bought you a beer bottle? Will that beer bottle develop the country or improve the situation in your community? The answer is no. So please dear EmaSwati, let us wake up and vote for deserving candidates.
