THE UTOPIAN SOCIETY

Sir,

Perhaps the idea most people have about a utopian society would be one where there is no poverty, no discrimination of any kind and where equality and human rights are guaranteed.

While I doubt that such a society exists or can be created in a world where people worship money and where those entrusted to lead nations have a tendency of putting their own interests above everything and everyone else, there are people who believe that certain political ideologies are the gateway to utopia.

One such political ideology suggest that all wealth should be distributed equally among people and that nobody except the State should have the right to own property, meaning that all property would actually belong to the State and private ownership and the right to inheritance would cease to exist.

The ‘father’ of this ideology went as far as to suggest that even children should be removed from the care of their parents and placed in State ‘indoctrination’ schools at a young age. While things like free education for all and equal pay for all regardless of profession might sound like a good idea, the problem with this ‘utopian’ ideology is that, like a dictatorship, it has usually been imposed on people by force in countries where it has been implemented and is not usually tolerant of religious freedom or dissenting views.

Another problem with this ideology is that it relies on expropriating assets from already established private entities in order to then supposedly re-distribute the wealth equally, and this has led to the collapse of economies in many countries where this ideology has been implemented.

Another political ideology which many people believe, is the sure way of creating the utopian society, suggests that people should have the freedom to elect their own leaders. It also suggest that people should have the right to own property.

However, this ideology gives rise to capitalism which allows people to amass as much wealth as is possible in a lifetime, and it is usually people who are already wealthy who become wealthier, hence the saying; ‘the rich get richer while the poor get poorer’. And while poverty levels may be lower in countries where this ideology has been implemented; it is only a small minority of ‘super rich’ people who own most of the wealth in those countries.

In my view, a utopian society would be one where biblical values are respected and upheld. This is the only way we could create a world where peace reigns supreme and where violence, greed, selfishness and hatred would be things of the past.
