CHILDREN NEED OUR GUIDANCE

 Sir,

Parenting is one of the hardest jobs I have ever come across, yet most rewarding on a daily basis. I purposefully call it a job because there is so much that is required of you; physically, financially, spiritually, psychologically as well as emotionally.

This is a very tricky, mysterious and different kind of job; as you can choose to attempt to excel in it; yet get unsatisfactory results; as much as some may choose to do the least of parenting; yet their children turn out well.
I was single-handedly brought up by my mother, whom I highly commend as I; being a parent now;  often wonder how she did it all with such ease and grace.

Once again; prior to being a parent; I admit to have negatively judged people that in my opinion were not perfect parents. I would actually think they were selfish and cowards, as parenting is so easy and basic; you just need to be there for your children; lo and behold; there is so much more!

As much as parenting is not so easy; it is still by far one of the greatest blessings. You do not have to parent your own biological children only. I believe the mere fact that we are adult members of this beautiful kingdom and the world; therefore, all its inhabitants are our children in one way or the other.

Having children is such a blessing; yet such a challenge. However; as much as it is such a demanding aspect; one has no choice; but to excel in it. Let us remember that these children did not ask to be born; we made them consciously or unconsciously at the heat of passion.

They are our sole responsibility. I have since realised that with modernisation taking place; the true definition of parenting has evolved too. Teenagers can easily be parents to a number of children; there are so many child- headed homes lately; turning these children to become parents before time; also, our parents (grandparents) find themselves parenting our children for one reason or the other.

Parenting is not only providing a home for your children, food on the table and providing the best education. Children need more; they need to see and feel your love in action, they need your physical presence; they need that assurance that you will always be there, that they are our priority as, well as they need us to teach them about life, money, socialisation, God as well as social issues. These children need our perfect guidance. We cannot rely on our nannies or school teachers.

We still have to be parents. No matter how hectic your life can be; let us make sure we give our children what is rightfully theirs – and that is our love for them in the literal sense.

Let us remind them, on a daily basis, how much we love and are proud of them in thought, word and in deed! Our society will surely be better off if our children are brought up with positive parenting, where despite all the challenges we are faced with on a daily basis do not interfere in our mandate of being the best parents we can ever be.
