THE UNPARDONABLE SIN

Sir,

“Wherefore I say unto you, all manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men,” Matthew 12:31. What is this sin which heaven regards with such abhorrence?

One thing is certain from this text: we are dealing with a sin. The Bible gives us a simple definition of ‘sin’. “It is the transgression of the law,” 1 John 3:4. This unpardonable sin is not only about breaking God’s law, it is also an offence against the Holy Spirit.
There are three primary functions of the Holy Spirit, that is to teach us all things (John 14:26), to guide us unto all truth (John 16:13) and to convict of sin (John 16:7, 8).

The Bible also gives us three things that we do to the Holy Spirit. We can grieve Him (Eph 4:30), we can despise Him (Heb 10:29) and we can resist the Holy Spirit (Acts 7:51). So there we have three things that men will do to insult the spirit of God: they grieve, they despise, and they resist Him.

Let me make this point clear: We serve a God of infinite love and compassion.
It is not His will that anyone should perish. He has promised us in 1 John 1:9 that: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

On condition of sincere confession, God promises to forgive any sin, regardless of its nature. “Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool,” Isaiah 1:18. There is no guilt too great for Him to cleanse away. He waits with outstretched arms to receive any who take the first step toward His forgiveness and mercy.

If the Father is so willing to forgive and save, why should there be such a thing as an unpardonable sin? The answer is simple. This sin is never forgiven because it is never confessed. God will not force His pardon upon sinners; they must repent and confess. The beautiful promise of 1 John 1:9 contains that significant little word ‘if’ – ‘if we confess our sins’. On the authority of God’s Word, we can be assured that every sin will be forgiven if confessed.

The unpardonable sin is not any particular act which can be isolated and labelled. It can be any sin which is cherished in the face of light and knowledge. It actually is a condition of seared sensitivity brought on by persistent disobedience to recognised truth.

Dear readers, let us allow the Holy Spirit to lead and guide us every day. As long as we allow the Holy Spirit to teach, guide and convict us, we can never be guilty of committing the unpardonable sin.
