BRAVO SEC MD

Sir,

It is not every day that a company receives messages of kindness after its vehicle had been involved in an accident as tragic as the one that took place past Motshane about two weeks ago. That was a notorious accident and at this point, the public is eagerly awaiting a police report that will state the exact cause.

Judging by the charges laid against the Swaziland Electricity Company (SEC) truck driver, when he appeared in court a few days after the accident, there is strong suspicion that he was on the wrong.
Of course, he is innocent until proven guilty by the courts, but we eagerly await the full story.

That being the case, kindly allow me to express my greatest admiration in the way the SEC Managing Director, Meshack Kunene handled the whole saga. In the history of accidents in this country, I have never seen an alleged aggressor cunningly and humbly turning into a victim – in my analysis, that is how things have turned out in as far as this accident is concerned.
As correctly said by many already, SEC did not sanction its driver or vehicle to cause or be part of the accident. It was just an accident that could have befallen anyone. However, the highlight for me has been the SEC MD and his PR team’s sympathetic response. I hear they put aside their long-planned business to attend to the crisis.

Shelved

Newspaper reports suggested that Kunene shelved a tour of the SEC’s various workstations countrywide, to visit the bereaved families.
He did not merely pay a visit to pass condolences, but also made a E15 000 contribution to each of the eight mourning families.

Where and when in Swaziland have you ever heard of such? The Times of Swaziland showed some pictures of the SEC MD visiting some of the accident victims at the Mbabane Government Hospital. I also read from the same newspaper that the representative of the bereaved families spoke highly of SEC during the memorial service held at Nkhaba. Indeed, the way the company responded to the accident and the kind-heart that it showed to the families is to be encouraged.

I hope other companies and individuals have learnt that it helps to take full responsibility after such accidents have happened, to minimise finger-pointing. At least, for a change, the people of Swaziland are happy with SEC’s attitude because of the sympathy they have extended to the grieving families.
