PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL ORDERLIES ARE GREEDY

Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font

Sir,

I want to express my disappointment on the actions of the psychiatric hospital orderlies. The orderlies are claiming that they are overworked and paid low salaries by government. Really this is untrue. They started complaining when the courts deliberated on the issue of orderlies working in government health facilities, where they were paid on Grade A2 and the orderlies working at the psychiatric hospital were paid on Grade A4.

When government was ordered to pay orderlies according to the same grade as those in the psychiatric hospital, that’s when the problem started. They demanded a new job description from government and refused to do duties of orderlies and want to be given a higher grade than the other orderlies in other health facilities. Really this is greediness and being egoistic. These people are employed without qualifications and some didn’t make it to Grade V in school.

The procedure for employing orderlies in the country is the same and there is no extra qualification for them to work at the psychiatric hospital. If they want a new grade, which grade do they want and for what? I think is high time government took appropriate action and deal with these orderlies because now they do not want to do anything.

They come late for work and break early before time. This is surprising and why is the Ministry of Health quiet? It is not true that they were demoted to cleaners. The problem is that they don’t understand their job description. Nurses working at the psychiatric hospital are paid at the same grade of nurses working in other health facilities in the country. These orderlies demoted themselves by refusing to work in the wards. They do not understand what being an orderly is. They are claiming that orderlies are cleaners. Some understand their job description.

Recommendations:
1. Government must redeploy the orderlies to other health facilities because they have refused to be tasked in the wards.
2.    If redeployment is difficult let government come clear and declare these posts of orderlies redunt ( not needed) and replace them with a security and cleaning company to provide security and cleaning services in the wards and the hospital offices.
