IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNICATION

Sir,

Daily it becomes more and more obvious to me that communication is a skill which numerous people lack.  One needs only to visit a place of business to realise that perhaps employers are not aware that they have to teach people in their establishments how to communicate as in most homesteads this is a trait that has been found to be lacking.

I had occasion to visit a place of business where someone who loads one’s vehicle with bulky and huge commodities upon observing me reverse, not only directed me but also greeted!  As I handed him my receipt so he could load my vehicle he informed me that I should go back and sit in my vehicle while he sought the commodity I required as this was not something he was familiar with.  Upon his return he apologised for having taken time and yet again reiterated his previous statement.

After loading my vehicle, he thanked me for my patience and wished me a beautiful day.  Wow! Sunshine! How commendable!
This simple gesture on the part of this gentleman so uplifted me for firstly in most businesses this is uncommon.  It is common to be asked how one is in a tone that denotes absolutely no interest or desire to know.  One is not greeted! A simple greeting can be revitalising to a person!

Further, I was humbled that he found it imperative to inform me that he was unfamiliar with the section in the warehouse, where the swimming pool salt would be stored.

This took into consideration any uneasiness I would feel especially if he took longer than I would have expected.  Such courtesy and consideration is rare from employees in most of the business establishments I frequent.  If they do not stand dumbfounded mumbling to each other under their breath, divulging their total ignorance on the product in SiSwati, they disappear for long periods of time, walking away from one without even furnishing one with an explanation for their disappearance!

Do store owners know: that their employees do not greet; that cashiers carry on private discussions with packers in our presence; that our groceries are practically thrown at packers and that cashiers sigh irritably upon being informed that one or other commodity differs from the price on the shelf?

Needless to say, the above examples divulge people of totally different backgrounds and character. To ensure one’s business prospers it therefore becomes compulsory that employers take nothing for granted and teach their staff how to greet and the importance of keeping the customer informed at all material times.  Likewise in any household regular communication will ensure the home fires are kept burning! Need more love, learn to communicate!
