CAN GOVT ASSIST WITH STUDY PERMITS ISSUE?

Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font

Sir,

Kindly publish my letter of concern in your widely read newspaper. Just a few weeks ago, it was reported that hundreds of Swazis found themselves spending nights sleeping on the floor at the New Mall.

They did so because they wanted to obtain study permits from the South African High Commission.
I am made to understand that the office of the South African High Commission recently released a statement on the issue and explained the situation. However, I am concerned that there continues to be challenges. I am saying this because already a lot of Swazi students are facing  difficulty there.

Since last week, most of the students have been accepted at different universities in South Africa and have indeed been awarded scholarships by the Swazi Government but they are turned back by the staff.

The staff has been making it clear that they were only going to assist them once they submit proof of payment for tuition fees at their respective universities.

This is now a dilemma and one wonders how the South African High Commission office’s expectation ought to work when  parents and guardians are expected to await payment of the tuition fees by our government through the scholarship policy.

The biggest worry we have now is that the students might lose the spaces that they were granted by the South African universities and this will destroy their futures.
