NEW KID ON THE BLOCK

Sir,

The advent of the new kid in the telecommunications industry, Swazi Mobile, has brought untold excitement to the long-suffering, forever crying for competition Swazi public.

After years of monopoly by another telecommunications giant, the Swazi nation, like an only child, is spoiled for choice.
Both companies, in the healthy spirit of fair competition, are hell-bent on having the lion’s share of us customers. As the learned never fail to remind us of lesser intellect; competition is healthy. How true!

To Victor Gamedze, your management team and staff; I boldly say bravo and thumbs up for bringing the much needed competition. You have proved that no matter how Swazis can be viewed as docile and failures in running successful business ventures, we do have our own Bill Gates in the midst of Swazi society.

To MTN, no hard feelings bafethu; you have served us well in the past. Now that there is competitors in the field you have exclusively monopolised for so many years, now is the time to prove that you are a veteran player in the industry. Outdo yourselves by offering us more goodies because Swazi Mobile is breathing down your neck guys.

Now, away with the niceties; Swazi Mobile you must keep on surprising us with your social responsibilities. The brilliant idea of offering shares to the Swazi nation was a stroke of genius. Some Swazis can now call themselves shareholders - something which was a pipe dream to many rank and file Swazis like me and thousands of others.

I am speaking now for the ordinary Swazi who disrupted his or her meagre and measly budget in a desperate attempt to grab the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity by beating the December 31 deadline but failed – just by no more than E100 to qualify for the E600 purchase, having achieved the necessary and mandatory 30 calls?

People are aggrieved that the timing of the extended December deadline was too near the hustle and bustle of planning for Christmas and above all, the dreaded January and schools fees. The general feeling is that you should have either stuck with the November deadline or looked beyond January only. Well, there you have it.

They are a faithful bunch of Swazi Mobile customers; judging from my conversations with some of them, they wanted to be proud owners of your company but sadly they were beaten by the deadline.
