PAIN OF BEING AN SCU STUDENT

Sir,

I am a Swazi child who feels pain which I am sure has never been felt by any child in the country or even the so-called people in authority.

At first it felt like a dream but now it is a reality and so unbelievable that after so much hard world my future can be shattered like this. Each and every day we are hoping for the best but it become more confusing and frustrating.

As a Swazi child I thought I had the right to education but right now I cannot stop wondering if we still have that right as per the constitution. I am tempted to believe that perhaps that provision was removed. If that right exists in our constitution our government wouldn’t have reached the decision to close our university.

Our right is now violated and this is done by the same government we regard as our parent. I wonder if the Attorney General was engaged when the decision was taken and what advise he gave to those that were involved. I do not want to believe that he approved of the decision to violate our right.

Appreciation
While our fate as students remains unknown, I would like to thank our Members of Parliament for their support and stand regarding the issue. For me they are true leaders and good representatives of the citizens because the stand that they took was well informed and in line with our constitution.

According to the MPs we were supposed to be back in class as of last week Wednesday but Cabinet rejected all that. As for how Cabinet reversed the decision taken by the legislators I do not know.

Are they superior? How can they allow a violation of human rights in this manner? They reversed a decision taken by representatives of 55 constituencies which is a clear sign that Parliament is not given the respect that it deserves. So what are we saying to ourselves as Swazis, should we bother about participating in the elections next year? Why should we go if our representatives do not have a voice?

Our Right
The time has come for us to make government see that enough is enough and we demand our right which we shall fight for and we will do whatever it takes to get it back. We appeal to our parents, friends and the public to be in solidarity with us this week on our slogan ‘Right to education’. An injury to one is an injury to all so we must all be united. We shall fight for the SCU to open, we are more than ready to do so for the sake of our future. The revolutional struggle is about to start!
