SOME CHIEFS TOO CORRUPT

I have noticed with growing concern the propensity by some chiefs to be corrupt to the core. Being a very senior citizen in this country has made me realise that all is not well in the administration of our constituencies, there is rot and more rot for that matter.

In my career as a manager, I have always hated corruption with a passion. Chiefs in the chiefdoms have really abused their authority and have seized powers from the authorities. First and foremost, chiefs must understand that they are not kings in this country, but are overseers for the authorities. However, what is happening is awful and downright out.

Customarily, the land belongs to the King but what is happening now is that the chiefs are now selling the King’s land. I have never had of the King selling land to anyone but go to the chiefdoms and ask the people there as to how much they have paid for the land they have built their houses on, it’s at almost prime rate.

Land in Swaziland is so cheap that with a single cow you can aquire a large portion of land. But people are now made to pay thousands of Emalangeni and one wonders if at all the King gets to get any share in that dirty transaction. Obviously no! we have seen how people’s homes have been demolished because of some unscrupulous chiefs allocating land illegally.

Chiefs got a tendency of repossessing land from people who have paid for the land but have delayed in putting up a structure. This is very rife and very upsetting to say the least. “ Emakhosi  elive akagcilati muntfu lapha eveni, kepha bo chief bayagcilata sibili.”  You then ask yourself if these chiefs were installed correctly? Was the King told the truth about the correct  chieftaincy candidates?

We are in agreement with the fact that chiefs must be paid a handsome remuneration but at the same time, chiefs must be honest in their duties because if they are not, the name of the King is brought to disrepute and people will start revolting just because of unscrupulous chiefs.
I am lucky though that in my chiefdom, we have a down to earth chief who is humble and not yet susceptible to corruption.
I am dispirited when I hear people despising our Monarchy that they bless wrongful chiefs. Let us look at it in this way  chiefs are installed by elders of that family and blessed by the King thereafter.  I am looking at the corruption that is happening in chiefdoms and condemning it with all the contempt it deserves.

Chiefs should be loyal to the blessing authorities and be fair and just in your rulings over and above do not be oppressive to your subjects.”  If at all injustices continue to happen, then we have no option but to report to the relevant authorities.
This article is directed to all corrupt and illegitimate chiefs.
