WHAT CRITERION IS USED TO PROMOTE NURSES?

Sir,

Recently the Ministry of Health approved promotions in the nursing cadre headed by the chief nursing officer. One wonders what criterion is used by the office of the chief nursing officer.

It seems like the office has no criteria in promoting the nurses, but when you are observant, the promoted nurses are related to senior health officers as well as the officers in the chief nursing officer’s office.

In my understanding one must be promoted according to qualifications and years of service as well as being a hard worker. It is very disappointing that young nurses are promoted whereas there are those who are dedicated in their work and have been in the profession for over 15 years and are well appraised by their managers and supervisors in health institutions.

We have observed that once a young nurse is promoted in an institution, the office of CNO makes sure that the nurse is further transferred to another centre. Really this is a sin in the eyes of God.
Furthermore, there is the issue of staff nurses who were previously nursing assistants. The office of the CNO does not care about them. There are many staff nurses who have degrees and masters’s and have been in the profession for a long time, and even oriented nurses from college and university, but are being overlooked for promotions.

In the previous promotion one staff nurse, who was a nursing assistant, was promoted yet she was too junior compared to the staff nurses who upgraded themselves to be staff nurses. One still wonders what the requirements for a nurse to be promoted are. The personnel file number of an individual clearly indicates when one was employed and the number of years in the service. If the promotions shall be given to individuals because they are related to some, the nursing profession is going down.
