ROAD RESERVE QUERY

Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font

 Sir,

Even though I have been a resident and ratepayer of Mbabane for over 20 years, I am still uncertain whose responsibility it is to maintain the roadside reserve.

This is due to the fact that in the 20 plus years that I have owned my property, I have never seen, even once, anyone from the Mbabane Municipal Council in my area, save for the garbage collectors who come twice a week.
The roadside reserve in other areas in Mbabane does not usually exceed a width of about four metres, however, the roadside reserve outside my property along Malagwane Hill measures nearly 30 metres in width and roughly 90 metres in length.

Responsibility

The problem I have is that I have had to take the responsibility of maintaining the huge expanse of this land, which I do not even own, at a cost of about E400 every month, even though I pay rates every year.
Maintaining that area is the only way I can avoid a situation where I would be unable to gain access to my front gate before the area became completely overgrown with jungle. This would also result in a serious fire hazard to the area. My question, therefore, is; is it now the responsibility of the ratepayers to carry out maintenance in Mbabane or are we being ripped off?

Concerned ratepayer

NOTE: In an effort to afford them the right to reply, this letter was emailed to the Municipal Council of Mbabane on August 7, 2017 and after numerous attempts to get a response nothing has been forthcoming.
