OUR GOVT SHOULD LEAD BY EXAMPLE

Sir,

When government took the decision to ban the teaching of all religions studies apart from Christianity in the country’s schools, many people were of the view that government had taken a step in the right direction, more especially because of the fact that Swaziland is considered as a predominantly Christian country.

Others were a bit sceptical about the motives which led government to its decision, arguing that freedom of religion is allowed in Swaziland and that by excluding other religions, the government was actually denying some people their rights by imposing Christianity on all children regardless of their religious backgrounds or the backgrounds of their parents.
However, no one in the country has been prevented from worshipping the gods of their choice in their various places of worship and no one has been forced to convert to Christianity. People in the country are still free to follow the religions of their choice!

But by choosing to ban other religions from schools, government has not proven itself to suddenly embraced Christian values.
All it has succeeded in doing is to lessen the burden of having too many subjects for pupils to learn.

There is too much discontentment with the way in which the country’s resources are used, with huge amounts being allocated to irrelevant departments and projects instead of useful and profitable ones like agriculture.
There is discontentment with the high levels of poverty, inequality and also the extremely low salaries and elderly grants which so many people in the country rely on for their survival amid unnecessary and extravagant spending on top-of-the range vehicles and even on furniture for certain government employees, some of whom already receive above average salaries even when compared to their counterparts in some developed countries.

There is discontentment with the high levels of taxation in the country amid rampant corruption and unaccountability within government.
The Bible says that in a well governed country, the people rejoice, not lament.
If by choosing to ban other religions in favour of Christianity in schools, government is hoping to instil Christian values in the country youth, perhaps, then it must consider leading by example.

Swazi Citizen.
