OPEN LETTER TO NATIONAL COMMISSIONER OF POLICE

Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font

Sir,

First and foremost let me acknowledge that I am an African who happened to attend the SADC Summit held in your country. I am from Zambia and it was my first time to visit Swaziland and because of an experience I had at the hands of a certain police officer I have decided that on my next vacation Swaziland will be my destination.

I have read a lot on social media and other news sources about how bad Swazi police are but because of that experience I have come to dispute that. Swaziland has got the best police service than other African countries I have been to. I happened to be with a friend who was cheated by a ruthless taxi driver during the summit and a Swazi, who was working closely with us advised that we should call the police helpline so that officers from the nearest police station would come to our rescue.

Soon after making the call, a group of officers came to our villa and among them was a short and fair guy who just came straight to us. Looking at him I thought he was going to victimise us because we were foreigners but he suddenly smiled and greeted all of us. The young man introduced himself as Sergeant Khumalo from the Mbabane Police Station. I will never forget the warm welcome he gave us. I was surprised that a Swazi police officer could pray with strangers and speak life to them. Though I do not know the national commissioner of police by sight but because of what I saw from this officer, I guess I know him now.

All I want to say is Swaziland will be a better country because of officers of this caliber. Sir you have the best quality of men under your command; people who fear God and love everyone, even strangers like us. How I wish the other SADC countries could train their officers to be like Khumalo.

Officers like him will help your country grow and have a good reputation. Mr National Commissioner keep up the good work and ask God for more insight as you go about your duties. You have, in the service, an officer who has made me make Swaziland my home away from home and because of him I love Swaziland. God bless you and the King of your country.

Charles Matuhe

Note: in an effort to afford the national commissioner of police the right to reply, this letter was emailed to the commissioner through the office of information and communication on May 17, however, there has been no response received.
