COULD THIS BE THE END FOR BULL?

Sir,

Empires by their nature, do not fall, they crumble brick by brick. I couldn’t find a proper phrase to describe the unfortunate situation faced by one of the county’s oldest and most successful club, Mbabane Highlanders which was relegated from the Premier League for the second time within a space of four years.

As the sun set on Thursday May 25, 2017, elite league football lost one of the key stakeholders of the game when Highlanders were beaten by Mbabane Swallows, a result which condemned them to the National First Division. Much to the agony of their throngs of loyal supporters who rally behind the club throughout the season, the once Mighty Bull failed to rise to the occasion when it mattered the most.

They failed to convince this football-loving nation that indeed they deserve to play in the country’s Premier League; and they have themselves to blame. As many commentators would attest, Highlanders’ predicament started showing during the early stages of the season and so serious was the situation that the then Director, Bheki ‘Rubber’ Simelane was forced out by a section of the team’s supporters who could not stomach the team’s dismal performance.

Today we live to tell the tale of how Highlanders reached their lowest ebb ever, something which has seen the revered brand of ‘Ezimnyama ngenkani’ becoming a laughing stock. As the team takes the lonely route to the First Division again, one cannot cease to ask himself this question; could this be the end of an era for the once Mighty Bull? I am quite sure that for the hordes of the team’s loyal supporters,  this question is probably provoking some tears, and they cannot endure the painful experience of seeing their beloved team slowly but surely sinking into oblivion, following in the steps of other great clubs which disappeared.

I am not a Highlanders supporter but an independent football analyst who feels duty bound to tell whosoever is concerned at the capital city giants to develop a positive attitude while uprooting the ills in the club that will ensure that the club is brought back to where it belongs. The Highlanders family must unite and work towards reviving the yesteryear dominant side which was a force to be reckoned with in local football circles.

This is the time when the team elders put up a sound administration structure that will spearhead the team to greater heights.
This is not the time to make unfounded accusations on certain individuals but it is time everyone who calls himself or herself a Highlanders person to stand up and play a pivotal role in saving the club.

As much as there are those who are celebrating the downfall of this great club, the Highlanders family must not lose focus but they must work towards putting their house in order. Football is a game of emotions hence patience is key in every aspect of life. All is not lost maHighlanders; the team’s survival is in your own hands.
