INSPIRATION, AUTHORITY OF THE BIBLE

Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font

Sir,

All scripture is given by the inspiration of God (2 Timothy 3:16). God breathed truth into men’s minds; they in turn expressed it in the words found in scriptures.

The Bible does not contradict itself as some people claim. Written over a span of 1 600 years by at least 36 different authors from all walks of life, the Bible is united in its theme. For example, Moses was educated in Egypt and became a prophet over Israel. Peter was a simple fisherman, Solomon was a king, Luke was a doctor, Amos was a shepherd, and Matthew was a tax collector. All the writers were of vastly different occupations and backgrounds.

The Bible was also written on three different continents: Asia, Africa and Europe; under many different circumstances with the writers having different purposes for writing.
Moses wrote in the desert of Sinai, Paul wrote in a prison in Rome, Daniel wrote in exile in Babylon, and Ezra wrote in the ruined city of Jerusalem.

David wrote during a time of war, Jeremiah wrote at the sorrowful time of Israel’s downfall, Peter wrote while Israel was under Roman domination and Joshua wrote while invading the land of Canaan. Isaiah wrote to warn Israel of God’s coming judgment on their sin, Matthew wrote to prove to the Jews that Jesus is the Messiah, Zechariah wrote to encourage a disheartened Israel who had returned from Babylonian exile, and Paul wrote addressing problems in different Asian and European churches.

This unity points to the fact that one author guided these writers through the whole process and as we noted earlier the author is God himself. This is just one amazing proof of the divine inspiration and authority of the Bible.

The Bible is the most well-known book in the history of the world, and no book has been attacked more than it. Sceptics have tried to destroy the authority of the Bible and have undergone every kind of scrutiny possible from archaeology, science, philosophy and computers.
Yet, despite all these attacks, the Bible proves to be true again and again. The fact that the Bible has remained steadfast in its authority after more than 2 000 years is another piece of evidence supporting its divine origin.

The Bible does not contain the Word of God but it is the Word of God. No other holy books, sacred writings, ancient traditions or creedal statements may be accorded authority and equal to that of the Bible. This also means that conscience, reason, feelings and religious experiences are subordinate to the authority of the scriptures. God bless you.
