NURSES COME DRUNK AT MENTAL HOSPITAL

Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font

Sir,

Thank you for allowing me space to raise an issue that is of great concern to me. Really one is surprised why drunk nurses are allowed to work while intoxicated and not punished. I wonder if the management is doing its duties fairly. The issue here is that most of the male nurses are related to the supervisors and management.

The nurses instead of being punished for their bad behavior are transferred to other departments and are never punished. They absent themselves from duty, come late for work while drunk. These things demotivate the other nurses as they see their colleagues going about their duties unpunished. This uncalled for behavior is mostly done by the male nurses.

I believe that the nurses who absent themselves from work should be punished; nurses who come to work drunk should be dismissed from work. The chief nursing officer should do something about this issue. The Swaziland Nursing Council should also do something to protect the patients from the drunk nurses.

One wonders which lessons are they teaching the patients as they have proven that they love alcohol and I think it is not a good place for them to work.

NB: When the head nurse was called, in an effort to email this letter to her, giving her an opportunity to reply, she responded by saying she would not bother herself with the letter as it did not mention her. The letter was further emailed to the relevant ministry on March 6, 2017 but unfortunately there has been no reply.
