PASS THE SEXUAL OFFENCES, DOMESTIC VIOLENCE BILL

Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font

Sir,

Women undergo the most painful experiences when it comes to love relationships. They are objects of oppression and they suffer the worst in the hands of their oppressors. They have succumbed to domestic violence and abuse because proper measures to educate them about the symptoms of abuse are lacking.

Lover-murder cases have hogged the headlines to the extent that the nation has been desensitised to it. Gender based violence and abuse is an evil that has been institutionalised in our society, and it has to be uprooted through women empowerment campaigns and workshops. The escalating rate of murder cases of this nature is due to the absence of a law that protects women, from all forms of abuse and violence.

Perpetrators have got nothing to fear because nowadays they are remanded in custody and are released on bail, as long as they strictly adhere to their bail conditions.

Women are viewed as entities where men satisfy their sexual desires. Women are human beings like the rest of humanity, and they deserve to be treated with dignity because they have a right to live peacefully and to be protected. Seemingly the country will suffer a huge loss as the women population is dwindling due to the fact that they are being murdered on a weekly basis. I humbly call upon the nation to join hands in eliminating domestic violence and abuse against women.

Our heads will be held high immediately the Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Bill is passed into law. Let’s break the silence, speak in one voice and report such cases to the police and other relevant government agencies.

S Shabangu
