VISIT SD, WE ARE LENIENT

Sir,

I wonder when visiting a neighbouring country if I will be treated leniently when I abuse their drink-driving laws? Will a magistrate irresponsibly promote tourism by promising leniency towards drink-drivers because as a tourist who has come to create revenue for the country, I will be treated differently to locals?

Will the magistrate say this needs to be looked at because people have come to spend and they should not be frustrated?
We invite people into the country, sell them alcohol (then force them to drink?) and arrest them? I’m pretty sure this is exactly what happens in South Africa, Mozambique and the world over?
I’m sure in fact they are sterner with visitors too because as visitors we should actually be respecting and heeding laws even more so, surely.

Nobody anywhere has alcohol sold to them; they buy it themselves as hopefully responsible adults.   Tourists will not get the same level of punishment as locals because it’s a good boost for the kingdom’s tourism figures? Should we market this?
This ridiculous school of thought was done by this magistrate and previously also pushed forward by a pastor (also once part of our wonderful judicial system), but he also pushed that people with ‘fancy cars and bucks’ from outside our borders should be treated leniently.

If we treat visiting drink-driving offenders with lenience, what kind of respect will it build for our kingdom (which is trying to elevate itself to a First World status) and its laws?A drink-driver is ‘a drink-driver’ wherever he is from, whatever he is driving and however bulging his wallet is. All drink-drivers are fully aware how dire the consequences can be. What is called for is consistency and for whomever is presiding in court to use a sensible guideline for everybody who stands accused.   Are the magistrate’s views agreed by others who enforce the law here?
