WHY WAS HLOPHE SINGLED OUT?

Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font

Sir,

Approximately 12 days ago, a cruel and barbaric act of violence was committed by agents of the Mbabane Municipal City Council, resulting in a horrible and painful death from extensive burns of Mangwaneni resident Vusi Mfanzile Hlophe.

To this day no apology or explanation has been received from the council.
There are many questions resulting from this incident; why was Hlophe singled out for the destruction of his house when there are many similar dwellings in the area and why was the mayor unaware of the order to destroy Hlophe’s house as he admitted to a family member.

Is terrorising ordinary citizens who are merely trying to survive in very difficult economic times the correct use of the rates paid to council in good faith?

As a community, we should expect no less than a thorough police investigation, without the intimidation of witnesses by council, leading to the arrest of the perpetrator(s) of this murder together with an apology and proper compensation to the family of the victim from the Mbabane Municipal Council, and an investigation and possible disciplinary action of the member of the council who singled out Hlophe.

It is only a matter of time before this explodes in the South African media, causing potential embarrassment to His Majesty as the current chairperson of SADC.
We are watching carefully to see if a family without financial resources or powerful political connections can receive justice in our system.

Concerned Mbabane resident
