EXCUSES WE MAKE

Sir,

It is normal these days, when one informs another that she jogs, for people to immediately justify why they do not jog.  I cannot speak for others but I have found that when I do not jog or work out, not only do my knees give me problems but my whole body just aches.

I have also noted that my mental state tends to become negative and I am less enthusiastic about life. This proves my theory that bodies are breaking down from lack of use and not from over-use. I have often found that when we explain things to others, it is more often than not because we want to feel better about not taking responsibility and ownership of a situation.

Upon being invited to a function, many feel insecure because they think they will not know anyone there or because they feel threatened that they may not be able to keep up with everybody else who may be there. I have found that when we face fear in the face, confront it and remove all those demons in our mind which tend to hold us back, we come out better people on the other side. If we do not like what we are getting, then we had better change what we are doing.

We are all where we are through our thoughts and beliefs. Excuses have held us back from progressing. Whether it is failing to take responsibility for our bodies or whether it is failing to try something new, in an attempt to experience life in all ways, nothing in our lives will change. We will get fatter and more miserable when clothes do not fit!

I was given an amazing piece of advice years ago by a friend.  She said when you fear something, ask yourself what is the worst thing that can happen?

And once you get that answer, then ask yourself what is the best thing that can happen? If you get anything in between, the worst and the best, consider yourself lucky!

I often use this when in a state of fear or uncertainty. After experiencing whatever it may be I always ask myself, what did I learn from this? I deal with it as if it were a full blown enquiry looking at every aspect of the matter and I compliment myself on doing it. Upon taking control and responsibility one always finds that the problem is not as gigantic as initially projected in one’s mind.

The next time you find yourself wanting to justify why you have not done something, stop yourself and make a conscious decision to sort out the matter immediately. A life without experiencing and doing new things is a life wasted besides being a boring life. Not all things cost money. Spending time with family and friends, taking a moment to converse with someone along the street, sharing anecdotes with an acquaintance, all of these add value to life.

Isolating self by sitting in one’s room is certainly not going to take anyone closer to feeling uplifted and alive! Such behaviour tends to make one feel alone and despondent. Remember, we can always only get out what we have put in!
