EMPOWER PRIMARY SCHOOL TEACHERS

Sir,

Kindly allow me to release my emotions and also say my views or concerns pertaining the corruption that has infested the most important ministry in Swaziland.

The Ministry of Education is not leading by example, especially in terms of promoting teachers to deputy head teachers’ posts and other higher posts, as well as in issuing degree posts for primary teachers with bachelor’s degrees and bachelor’s degree posts for secondary school teachers. But the people who suffer the most are primary school teachers.

They are the most degraded in the ministry yet they are the ones who build a foundation of knowledge among young individuals.
They are really the ones who transform the raw material to a product that is further polished by secondary teachers, up to institutions of higher learning.

It is very painful to learn that primary school teachers are not given degree posts because there is the assumption that they should remain primary teachers’ diploma, they were hired with their diplomas and hence they should die having that level of expertise.

This is ridiculous. Actually, it contrasts with the fact that as a teacher, one has to be ahead with information and be competent in the teaching process. We all know that the world is not static, a lot of changes are taking place out there, hence we need to implement such changes too in order to build the future nation and young individuals who will grow to their full potential, being self-directed, knowledgeable and able to make informed decisions.

We, as primary school teachers, cannot be able to equip our learners with the necessary skills, knowledge, values and attitudes for a better living if we are not enlightened.
There is a need for us to keep on sharpening our skills through in-service training, or by furthering our studies without being scared as if it is taboo for a primary school teacher to hold a degree. Being a primary school teacher is not a misfortune/bad-luck as this stigma is created in us.

We are necessary and we deserve to be respected and have equal opportunity in terms of furthering our studies for better remuneration. Therefore, I would like to urge all primary school teachers to stand up and empower themselves with higher education.

Velamuva
