GIVE US OUR 17 PER CENT

Sir,

Please allow me space in your widely read newspaper to address the chairperson of the joint negotiations forum.
I am one of the heads of department who were short-changed. I did not get even a single cent in the recent much talked about increment.

They have coined it ‘dvuladvula’ but to me it is ‘dvubuta’ because I was disappointed, ‘ngadvubuteka’ when I received my pay slip. You promised that in April we would be happy, to us it caused sadness. Our families cannot believe that we did not benefit anything from the salary review. Some of my colleagues had their salaries cut by E900. Why?

I do not blame the 47-year-old fireman who committed suicide after receiving his salary. He was saddened by the figures. I also cried when I got mine. Fortunately I am strong, I am still waiting for my share to settle my mounting debts. I just want to start afresh, live a debt-free life with my back pay.

I humbly request you and your team to reconsider your action. Give heads of department their well deserved increment. Seventeen per cent on C6, that is if the E1 is problematic as it appears so. I am looking forward to smile in August just like we were promised. The team must have mercy on us because we are broke and we had budgeted for that money.

Disappointed HOD
