Sir,

The curtains have already fallen for the 2014/ 15 football season. And of course, there is no iota  of doubt that the football-loving nation was  captivated for the entire season, courtesy of the four major tournaments namely; the SwaziTelecom Charity Cup, the Castle Premier Challenge, the SwaziBank Cup and the MTN Premier League.

As an ardent football lover, I cannot resist the temptation of penning a piece to outline all the factors that characterised the recently ended season.

Swazi Telecom Charity Cup

As usual, the season began with the SwaziTelecom Charity Cup which has proven to be one of the major football tournaments in this tiny Kingdom of eSwatini. With the noble idea of helping the destitute, the Swaziland Posts and Telecommunication (SPTC) saw it fit to utilise football to achieve their goal, an initiative they incepted in 2002. The 24 teams comprising of Premier League and National First Division never disappoint, as they battled out for the top six finish in the voting exercise which also ensured that they reached the one million vote’s target. Meanwhile, community projects gave the destitute communities the rare opportunity of mingling with the elite league players and giving the much desired assistance in completing the projects. Already dubbed ‘Itakuseta Waya Waya’, six teams had to contend for the E750 000 winner’s prize at stake in football games at Somhlolo National Stadium. The throngs of football followers were kept at the edges of their seats as the two most successful clubs in the new century, Royal Leopard and Mbabane Swallows crossed swords in the final game, where the beautiful birds won via the penalty shoot-out to clinch the 13th edition of the annual tournament. Surely this tournament has proven to be an important event in local football calendar and it is becoming much bigger and better with each passing year.

Comfort Jele,
HAWANE
