SD NOT IMMUNE FROM TERROR

Sir,

The world is dark and full of terror. Planes are vanishing from the sky and terrorists are killing people who exercise their right to freedom of religion, journalists who exercise their right to free speech and kidnapping and even murdering little kids that exercise their basic right of getting an education. With all this terror in the world we lift our eyes and looketh whence our help cometh from:

America the Great, the self-appointed sheriff of the world, the bringer of democracy and the big brother who is always watching over all nations and ready to bring justice swiftly and truly to all those that dare harm the weak and defenseless.
It is not the first time that terror, mostly from Muslim extremists, made the world pause and take note, Bin Laden and September 11, 2001 is still engrained in our brains. Terrorism was so the rage back then that even little Swaziland who had never experienced any serious terrorist attacks, proactively moved to pass one of the sternest Anti-terrorism laws in the world.

When the United States, the poster boy for anti-terror asks you to tone down your anti-terrorism laws, what does that say about you?
Terrorism has shaped world politics and events in the last decade, after 9/11 the US took the fight to any Islamic countries suspected to harbour, sponsor or sympathise with terrorists. This led to the attack of Afghanistan, Iraq and eventually to the Arab Spring which led to the toppling of Hussein in Iraq, Gaddafi in Libya and now North Korea, Iran and Saudi Arabia are next in line in the world’s fight against terror.

Funny thing about the US fight against terror is that it has led to the mushrooming of more terrorist organisations: ISIS, Al Shabaab and Boko Haram.
Boko Haram is most notorious for kidnapping over 200 girls in Nigeria and has progressively crept from a small town in northern Nigeria to controlling about a third of Africa’s richest and most populous nation while killing an estimated 13 000 people in the process.

Their story is a terrorist version of Drake’s song ‘Started from the bottom’. Jokes aside, it would have been a lot easier to crush Boko Haram six years ago when they were few in number and still occupying a small area.
One may ask: What was the Nigerian government doing then? What is it doing now? What are the AU and UN doing?  Well, the Nigerian leaders couldn’t be bothered by a small group of thugs while busy helping themselves to the nations enamours coffers.
