I prefer polygamy - Minister Hlobi
LOBAMBA — Minister of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs, Hlobisile Ndlovu, has revealed that she would prefer a polygamous marriage as opposed to a monogamous one.
Ndlovu who is in a monogamous marriage with Pastor Sam Fidelis said this in Parliament yesterday. The couple was recently involved in a spat at OR Tambo International Airport in Johnnesburg where Fidelis allegedly took her wedding ring after finding her with an unidentified man at the airport’s VIP lounge.
Ndlovu disclosed her preference during a joint sitting of the House of Assembly and Senate where parliamentarians where debating the ratification of 28 international conventions or protocols.
Ndlovu made this statement in support of Senator Chief Kusa who had said he had reservations on Article 6 (C) in the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa of 2004, which states that monogamy is encouraged as the preferred form of marriage.
"How can we, as a country that allows both form of marriages, then state that we prefer one over the other?" asked Chief Kusa.
He said the word ‘preferred’ should be removed.
Ludzeludze MP Nonhlanhla Dlamini said there was nothing wrong with the phrasing of the Article and said she personally preferred to be the only woman in her husband’s life.
However, Ndlovu then stood up and said: "I prefer polygamy and if I had to choose I would choose it."
Ndlovu had previously benn traditionally married to Channel Swazi Director Qhawe Mamba.
Senator Chief Kusa said he was surprised that not many men in the chambers were supporting him because he knew that several of them were in polygamous marriages.
After Ndlovu made her statement Speaker Prince Guduza wondered if the polygamy option applied to both genders.
The sitting eventually approved the Article without any changes.
Article 6 (c)
"Monogamy is encouraged as the preferred form of marriage and that the rights of women in marriage and family including in polygamous marital relationships are promoted and protected".
COMMENTS:
- The timing of Ndlovu's statement is bad because of what is in the news these days. I still think she is not representing the women folk too well because I dont know what stands to gain from a polygamous marriage except that that system opens up more chances of cheating for the women too. I mean really, what happens when the man is with the other woman..does this other just wait? Have polygamists thought of that? If I was a woman looking for life with more than one man myself I would opt for a polygamous marriage as well. But what of HIV...has anybody thought of that?

- Sorry Pastor Fidelis, you thought it was love at first sight but it turned out a nightmare that you are now ashamed to look at. Conditional love end up this way in most cases, better delete that beautiful picture in your head and continue with life. You were supposed to buy the clothes not the doll on display because we need it for marketing the next product on the line. Sister admit defeat; you cannot submit to anyone after spending most of your life on your own! You must be kidding, who on earth likes to share a man with another woman?

- Clearly Times of Swaziland is this all you can come up with for the day, in terms of reporting? Can't we the consumers have meaningful stories to read for a change. Please leave the lady alone, the world does not evolve around her to start with. I suppose in this country we're so bored so much so, the Minister's story is treated as a scoop or breaking news. What is happening with her life does not change or affect the price of oil, bread, taxes, etc. Please can we have proper journalists not reporters. We need something that is engaging and reading. Leave the lady alone, this is not news worthy. Vinny

- Mrs Minister please know that as you are a public figure the media will always be at your back, so do try to behave yourself even on your private life.

- She aint representing no woman folk. Isnt she the same woman who said to her no means yes? She is probably not even aware that polygamy does not apply to both genders.

- Speaker Prince Guduza wondered if the polygamy option applied to both genders:I wonder if Ms Ndlovu thought the same, i think it is likely.

- Haw Hlobi its unlike you to prefer polygamy yet on the otherside you deal with youth affairs. What are you teaching us as a youth and we were looking at you as our role model. Anyway be ready to deal with HIV as you are ready for polygamy.

- It is amazing to hear such a reaction from the Honourable minister. My perception is she did not mean it. One would like to believe that it was out of frustration and/or it was just a lamentation as a result of what is alleged to have happened at Oliver Thambo airport.
