Watch your mouth Mfomfo

Watch your mouth Mfomfo

MBABANE – Police have told former cabinet minister Mfomfo Nkhambule to watch his mouth.

The gripe of the state police were articles Nkhambule writes in the Times of Swaziland newspaper where he expresses his political opinions.

The articles are published every Monday under the title ‘Mfomfo on Monday.’

Apparently, the former Health and Social Welfare Minister’s articles have been rubbing certain quarters the wrong way and Nkhambule had to be called to order.

Nkhambule, now Chairman of Inhlava Forum (a political party), confirmed the questioning.

"I was invited by the head of the Intelligence Unit, who identified himself as Magagula, to Matsapha Police Station where he was with two subordinates (a certain Maseko and Sibandze). They questioned me over the articles I have been writing. I was also warned that the articles were now taking a subversive slant and cautioned me that I was now skating on thin ice," said the former Mtfongwaneni MP.

He said they impressed upon him that the articles were no longer just a column but were starting to hit on the authorities and could incite people to revolt against the head of state and this was beginning to pose a security threat.

serious

Nkhambule said the officers informed him that as much as the country had a new constitution, there were still laws that could be used against him, which were enacted before independence and they had very serious consequences.

Nkhambule stated though that the police were not violent towards him but spoke in a conciliatory tone.

"I was amazed that we still have such responsible people in the force. I can safely say that I got the message as they drove their point across without fighting with me," said Nkhambule.

The former legislator said his response to the police was that he understood their concerns and thanked them for their warning.

Asked whether he would stop writing the way he normally did after the warning from the police, the former legislator elected to play his cards close to his chest.

"We shall see in next week’s (Monday) article. My duty is to educate people politically and about democracy. I still believe that power should not be in the hands of one person but in all the citizens of a country," said Nkhambule.

Police spokesperson Vusi Masuku confirmed Nkhambule’s meeting with the police. He said the police went there to "interview Nkhambule."

  • image I was taking a break to make some comments, but I was disturbed and shocked by the private meeting between Former Cabinet Minister Mfomfo Nkhambule and the intelligent police unit that has turned into political drama. As a private citizen, I strongly believe that any private meetings that take place between me and the police authorities are private and sacred, and therefore should remain private and the former cabinet minister should known better. Above all, he should have been accompanied by his lawyer. Let us bear in mind that our former cabinet minister has been exposed to sensitive and classified information of the country which deserves utmost honesty and confidentiality for the sake of peace and stability of the country. As a principle man and humble politician, it does beg a question about his morals and the dignity of his political acumen. In that political equation; public have to respect our politician with trust. I used to read his articles with respect, but his current action has put a cloud of doubt about the code of privacy. How can you run a political party without the code of ethics? Politics is not for commercial business but it touches our social problems, therefore, private meetings are sacred. It does beg the question who is really Mfomfo Nkhambule? Let us remember that the same political “set up” that the former cabinet Minister Mfomfo Nkhambule is criticizing today, he is the direct progeny of such system, and had made him a politician of opportunity. In most of his writings, I have concluded that his problem is with the political set up that had made him and rejected him, but not the political philosophy behind the Democratic Tinkhundla system. • image Police should leave Mfomfo alone, we are not in Zimbabwe. Besides, now we have a constitution, let them charge Mfomfo and his case be heard in a court of law. We are tired of this scary yet harmless intimidations directed to people who speak their minds. Everyone has a right to write what he/she likes. I invite the police and their authorities to also write and counter-attack Mfomfo's ideologies, those are the dictates of freedom of expression. Personally, I don't miss any of Mfomfo and Prince Mfanasibili's columns. I believe these two have been in the system and so one is bound to get the finer details of the enslaving Tinkhundla system from them. 'Phambili ngeliciniso njengemuntfu afa, phambili!'

  • image It is shoking how people who eat from the same pot then change to say they are nolonger one of those!! Many years ago around the '80's as a fresh member of uMkhonto Wesizwe in Cidade Matola, Mozambique, we used to gether around fire ambers in the evening and talk about our return back to South Africa if we succeed in defeating the the racist army of the white people. However, it became a surprise to most of us former ANC soldiers that some of our leaders will one day say they are nolonger eating from the hands of the ANC party. Therefore, were eager to form the new kid in our political land scape, "COPE". One will ask do these people think we will believe that they are nolonger interested in eating and enjoying all the money, power and the beautiful women that come with such? We will wait and see, a man is driven by greed where ever he is what ever he is doing otherwise ther shall be no competition driving us to do crazy things!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We welcome the new year and the deaths of a number of many political figures in the country that God has already decided to recall. I just hope Thabo Mbeki and Cde Nelson are not one of those to leave us in peace to be with the Lord this year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
