MBABANE – The Swaziland Boxing Association (SWABA) championships will start on the first week of January.

The championships are in preparation for the Zone VI Boxing Championships to be held in Maseru, Lesotho in February.

SWABA Secretary Kingsley Kunene said they were planning to send more than 15 boxers to the Zone VI Games for international exposure.

He said they wanted to send a team that would compete than to participate.

"We want to send a strong team to the games and that is why the championships will be staged early this time. There are lot of tournaments that would be staged before the boxers are selected," he said.

The championships are usually staged mid-year.

"We have noted that there is a lot of talent among the local boxers, and we want to give the pugilists a chance to prove themselves. The championships would last for a month and we hope all the teams would be engaged," he said.

Kunene urged the boxers to continue training hard to maintain their bodies as they usually gain weight at this time of the year. He said the only way to keep them fit was to encourage them to train hard and not to eat anything they come across.

"Boxers have to eat a special diet to maintain their weights. It is disappointing when you discover than most boxers have gained weight and they have to change their categories," he said.

The last Zone Six Boxing Championships were staged in the country in August.
