He needs no introduction since he’s been in the entertainment industry and boasts of a vast fan base not only locally but internationally.

This is none other than South African house music extra-ordinaire DJ Cleo who is also rated as Africa’s best music producer having done big projects for small and big musos in Mzansi.

Born Cleopas Monyepao, the talented spinner has proven to the world that there is nothing stopping him from climbing the success ladder higher.

He has five albums released under his stable under the title ‘Eskhaleni Phases 1-5’. His latest release is receiving massive airplay both in TV and radios around South Africa.

The hit track ‘Hands up’ is doing well in the market if the massive airplay it receives on a daily basis is anything to go by.

Supports

The trick, DJ Cleo says, is making a hit not in a day, "even Rome was not built in a day" he supports his statement. Cleo says he spends much time talking to his fans and that’s how he usually gets the best ideas on a new hit.

"Take for instance, I did this track ‘Sisi ngihamba nawe’ and while I was in Durban a fan suggested I come with another version of an almost similar tune since that one has proven to be a hit. That’s how I then came up with the new version," he remarks in this wide ranging interview while gulping a sip on his water.

DJ Cleo also shares with us his recent performance in Dubai which he describes as extraordinary. He states that he has toured a lot of places around the globe but the response he got in Dubai can not be matched with any. He says he believes that the reason the crowd felt his hit was the fact that he has done a mix in his previous album that featured one muso from that land. "When we left with my manager Given we were wondering if the crowd would respond well to our music but we were so shocked when I took to the stage at 10:30pm to a fully packed club. I guess the mood was jovial after the first DJ had put up the momentum on the fans. As soon as they announced DJ Cleo… DJ Cleo, I felt the energy and it just gave me confidence that this is going to be a massive show and it sure was," Cleo adds.

Cleo’s latest performance in the country was last weekend when he was host to a launch of a new entertainment stable Chocolate Factory directed by Ayanda Masina.

Snubbed

Proving his status as the best DJ alive, the fans snubbed the dance floor when the list of eight deejays took the decks but as soon as Cleo was announced the immediate performer, they just crammed the dance floor and danced till they dropped. Interestingly about this show is that the DJ played eight beautiful tracks from his latest release, something that other deejays never do.

He hit the dance floor with his track ‘hands up’ when he took the decks.

This is proof of Cleo’s love for his Swazi fans.

He adds, 2009 is going to be a great year since he will be producing his artists including Bleksem, DJ What What and a latest surprise muso whom he describes as phenomenal.

"That does not mean I will stop deejaying but I will spend much time in producing my artists."
