MALKERNS – Canadian Rock band Last Supper rocked the house during the first ever Swazi Oscar Ceremony held at House on Fire on Saturday.

Guests danced the night away as the band, which recently toured Mozambique, belted several of their hit songs. The band would at times sound more like a heavy metal rock band like Guns and Roses just to show the audience that it was a real rock band. The Canadians also sounded like American rock icon Jimi Hendrix whose music emphasized the playing of the lead guitar.

Another entertainment group that wowed the audience was the local band known as Lilanga fronted by Bongiwe Dlamini. Dlamini together with Fikile Dladla (Flow-D and Phephile Hlophe (Jazz-P) collaborated and performed before South Africa’s Siphokazi Maraqana at the Convention Centre during the show organised by the Swaziland Royal Insurance Corporation (SRIC) for corporate executives two Fridays ago.

Lilanga started with the three singing an acappela which seemed to capture the interest of the audience. When they were joined by the rest of the band they belted out beautiful music that had elements of Hip Hop, R&B, House and other genres.

"Tonight’s performances were great, and everything went beautifully," said House on Fire Director Jiggs Thorne.

Apart from the music, the Swazi Oscars were presented to several organisations in support of the Rising Star Foundation, whose ambition is sending underprivileged children to the 2010 World Equestrian Games to be held in Kentucky, United States of America.

The children will specifically perform a sporting discipline called vaulting (gymnastics whilst one is on a moving horse). This kind of sport requires a lot of money hence organisers had to raise funds to send the children to the games.

Oscar recipients included the Ministry of Finance’s Principal Secretary, Dumsani Masilela, Inyatsi Construction, CONCO Swaziland, Buyani Zwane of FranklinCovey in South Africa and the sport’s trainee coaches Sifiso Dlamini and Sifiso Khumalo.

Each ticket to the black tie event cost E300.
