Leopards' striker Zoo' is dead

LOBAMBA – Former Sihlangu and Royal Leopards striker Mzwandile ‘Zoo’ Mamba is dead.

The speedy frontman died yesterday afternoon after sustaining injuries in a car accident on Friday night at Kashile in Mbabane.

The former Mbabane Swallows player died at his flat at the Lobamba Police Station at about 2pm. And the sad news of his demise was the talking point at the Somhlolo Stadium where his former club Mbabane Swallows played rivals Mbabane Highlanders. A minute of silence was even observed before the derby kick off as the news spread like wild fire.

Mamba is said to have called some of his teammates at Lobamba Police Station immediately after the accident happened on Friday night who then took him to RFM Hospital in Manzini where he was treated and discharged.

"He eventually died inside his police quarters in the afternoon and was discovered by his girlfriend who had come to check on him," said the source.

When the Sports Desk arrived at Lobamba Police Station at about 2pm, the player was being transferred to the morgue. Royal Leopards Manager Mxolisi Dlamini, who was also present at the scene, said he will only make an official comment after the matter has been properly reported to authorities.

"The situation is very delicate at the moment and one can only make a comment after the matter has been properly reported to the relevant authorities and his next to kin informed," he said.

Leopards’ players were found at the Station sobbing such that they could not even give us a comment on the demise of their team-mate. Among them was captain Mxolisi ‘Stopper’ Mthethwa who was too traumatised to comment.

Police Deputy PRO Superintendent Wendy Hleta confirmed the demise of the player who was also known as ‘Toyota’ for his darting runs upfront.

"We have received the report that he died at the police station after being involved in an accident around Mbabane.

"He is said to have sustained head, neck, and shoulder injuries and was discharged in hospital yesterday morning and eventually died in his house," she said.

Mzwandile died while he was still nursing an injury and according to his teammates he had plaster on his left leg.
