Over 200 cyclists expected in MTB Classic

MBABANE – Over 200 cyclists from Swaziland, South Africa and Mozambique are expected to compete in the Swazi Trac Three Reserves MTB Classic tomorrow.

The third race under the MTB series will see three cyclists competing for the MTB Championships doing their best to earn the points.

The trio of Fana Mendani, Menzi Tsela and Carlos Malinga are tied on 16 points each while Craig Randall is perched second with 14 points and road champion, Thulani Gule is third with 9 points.

The Swazi Trac will attract cyclists from neighboring countries including South Africa and Mozambique who have confirmed their participation. Swaziland Cycling Association (SCA) Secretary Menzi Tsela said this is the third race under Swazi Trac and they were looking forward to a successful race.

Cyclists will compete in the 70km which is the main event, 35km and the 10km. The 70km will go via Mbuluzi, Mlawula and Hlane game reserves while the 35km will race at Mbuluzi with the 10km travelling along Tabankulu sugar cane.

The race starts at 8am at Thembelisha Senior Preparatory School, Simunye.

The champion in the 70km will pocket E750 with the runner up getting E250 and the third finisher will receive E150. In the 35km, the winner will receive E350 with runner up getting E200 while the third finisher will pocket E100.

Registration will start today at 5pm to 7pm at Simunye country club while tomorrow it will be held at Thembelishe Senior Preparatory School starting at 6:30am and closes at 7:45am. It’s E100 for the 70km while cyclist will pay E70 for the 35km and it will be only E40 for the 10km.

Tsela said all cyclists are invited, even those who will not be competing for the prizes. He said this is expected to be a tough competition as cyclists will not be fighting for the prizes only but also for the points at stake.

"We would like to thank the sponsors for helping with such events. The sport is growing fast and we are happy as an association that every month we have a race," he said.

Tsela said the last race under the MTB series will be the Inyatsi Construction Extreme City to City to be held early next month.
