TIKHUBA – A teenager watched in horror as an enraged member of the Red Gown church (umJericho) shot and killed his live-in lover, before turning the gun on himself on Sunday.

The spine-chilling incident occurred at an area called Tidvumane, which is approximately 30 kilometres south east of Siteki town.
Xolile Mlaba (20) and Bonginkosi Ntshangase (26) who left behind two sons aged three and two years, are said to have engaged in a fierce fist fight before the latter ended their lives. Residents said the woman’s insecurities began earlier after her lover received an sms, which was one of the causes of their fight.

Xolile is said to have demanded to see the message and Bonginkosi refused.
The argument intensified after a female resident greeted Bonginkosi. This saw Xolile packing her bags and leaving for her parental home but he grabbed a gun and shot her dead.

The police are said to have taken the cell phone but no message was retrieved from it and it is believed that it may have been deleted during the fight. According to Apollo Fakudze, an eye witness, as they were fighting over the SMS Bonginkosi greeted a woman who was passing by, something that irked Xolile even more.
“She accused her boyfriend of having an affair with the woman. She claimed that the two used sign language when they conversed, making a fool of her,” he explained.

After this argument, Fakudze said a fist-fight ensued, which saw Xolile packing her belongings.
Seeing that she was about to leave him, Bonginkosi is said to have picked up a 12 bore shotgun (luhlwayi) which he had borrowed from a friend and pursued her.
Fakudze said he ran after Mhlaba to warn her that Bonginkosi was coming after her with a gun.
“He found us talking and grabbed her left arm, saying she should go back to their house, but she refused. He then cocked the gun. I tried to grab the gun from him, but failed.

“Bonginkosi shot her on the head. In my confused state I ran and hid behind a shrub. He walked away and then turned the gun on himself, shooting himself on the head,” Fakudze said.
He said an alarm was raised, and immediately the scene was littered with people including those from Tikhuba umphakatsi, and members of community police.

The 19 year-old Fakudze and other relatives led reporters to the scene, which is a stone throw away from the pitch where Bonginkosi used to flex his muscles. Police Public Relations Officer Senior Superintendent Vusi Masuku confirmed the reports and said police were still investigating.

...borrowed gun owner arrested

TIKHUBA  The gun which ended the couple’s lives had been borrowed from a resident Apollo Fakudze, which he used for hunting.

Fakudze, who was also an eyewitness to the murder, was later arrested by the police for removing his gun from the scene of crime.
Fakudze appeared before Magistrate Donald Mavuso.

Although he pleaded guilty, it did not seem that he understood what his charges were. He instead explained the shooting which made Mavuso wonder whether the information was not on the charge sheet.
“I will have to change your plea to not guilty,” said Mavuso. He was told to appear before court on November 6, to be remanded for trial which was set for November 18.

Fakudze was released on E500 bail, which he paid.
During a visit to the deceased, Bonkhosi Ntshangase’s homestead his grandmother Dzeliwe Fakudze was so emotional she cried uncontrollably and no comment was obtained from her.
