MANZINI – The battle for the last paying sport in the MTN Premier League
prizes, position five, is still wide open despite Tambankulu Callies’
four-point advantage.
Callies have 41 points but still face tough competition from Vovovo, who have 37
points, Manzini Wanderers (36 points) and Green Mamba (35) while Manzini Sea
Birds are mathematically still in as well as they have 34 points. There are
three more matches to play for each of these teams before the league curtain
falls. “We didn’t take out chances in the first half when we dominated and
created. We should have punished them but we didn’t do so. Even in the second
half, we came back but didn’t increase the tempo of the match, which allowed
them to punish us. “If we drop points, its denting our chances to finish at
number five but we still have three games to fight,” Vovovo coach Caleb
Ngwenya said after his side lost 1-2 to Moneni Pirates at the Mavuso Sports
Centre last Sunday.
He said it was an otherwise spirited performance by his team given all the
challenges they had administratively. “They are really working hard I’m
impressed,” Ngwenya said. His Pirates counterpart, in assistant Thembela
Dlamini, said the win was a bonus as Vovovo had been resilient. “They were
beating us in midfield, as they were faster than us, so I had to make a change
at half-time and introduced a faster player which gave us balance and we started
coming hard at them and scored,” he said. He said the relegation fight was
still on for them in the remaining three matches, but the win was a real boost
in their quest. Pirates still need at least three to four more points to be safe
even when the head-to-head rule has to apply. Goal difference does not count but
the head-to-head fixtures.
