MBABANE – Manzini Wanderers head coach Bongani Makhukhula has observed that
there are no shortcuts in football.
He was reacting to his side’s performance in the ongoing TotalEnergies CAF
Women Champions League/COSAFA Qualifiers, where the local side crashed out on
Monday.  “My brother you cannot expect to perform like teams that have been
active, as you know that we were not playing in the country. I am really happy
for the girls they outdid themselves,’’ Makhukhula said. The coach went on
to say that they had set up a foundation which they would use going forward.
“The girls have gained experience which I think will come in handy when our
domestic league returns,” he said. Meanwhile, Makhukhula said the team did not
feel his absence as he was in constant communication with them. “The
technology has made life better as it was like I was there with the team, I was
the one who was putting down the first 11 and the coaches would inform me when
they want to make some changes. So I cannot say my absence affected the team,”
he said.
Praise
He was full of praise for Nomvula ‘Nkola’ Sanga, who scored two goals in the
tournament. She scored her first goal in the game against Lesotho Defence Force
and again in the last game against Mamelodi Sundowns. “She is maturing like
wine and you cannot say that she is the oldest player in the team, she runs
faster than the young players,’’ he said. The coach further mentioned how
Nkola was a very dedicated player who loves the sport and this was the reason
she performed well in Durban. ‘Izi girls’ as the team is fondly known, were
representing the country in the first ever TotalEnergies CAF Women’s
League/COSAFA Cup and were knocked out of the group stages with a point in their
bag. They were pitted in the same group with Mamelodi Sundowns ladies team
(South Africa), Double Action (Botswana) and Lesotho Defence Force. They lost
the first game 3-0 to Double Action, played to a 1-all draw against Lesotho
Defence Force and got humiliated 6-1 by Sundowns.
