MBABANE – Mbabane Swallows striker Simanga Shongwe has come out to say that
the COVID-19 pandemic has given him a life-line that is if football returns this
season.
Shongwe suffered a muscle pull during the early stages of the league and has
since been trying to recover. According to the burly striker, the road to
recovery was not easy as his injury was taking longer to heal.
However, he has finally recovered and is looking to make his mark.
Campaign
He opened up that if it was not for COVID-19, he would not have played any of
the games in the current campaign. Games were halted on March 13 by Eswatini
Football Association (EFA) through a directive from government.
He said despite the uncertainty over the return of the 2019/20 season, he had
been keeping fit. “I am forever training because I want to maintain good body
shape and want to be physically fit. Training also reduces depression and
stress,” said Shongwe.
Asked for his opinion on the resumption of the season, he said: “My
observations from the other leagues abroad, the season can resume provided all
the equipment and WHO precautionary measures are met,” he said.
Quizzed how the outbreak of the coronavirus has affected him, he said; “We
have been greatly affected by the outbreak as sports were put on hold.
Obviously, our physical fitness is not at par like it was during the time when
the season was in action,” he said.
