ESWATINI TEAMS OBSESSED  WITH MUTI – ZAMBIAN PRESS

MBABANE – It seems as if the country has been dominating news of muti usage in
Africa.
Evidently, other Africans are starting to ask questions on the much belief and
obsession of local clubs with muti in football.
Last week, Mbabane Swallows went to Tanzania, Dar es Salaam, to honour their
Total CAF Champions League match against Simba Sports Club.
There were reports thereafter that a sprinkled substance on the path of Swallows
players leading to their dressing room entrance caused panic for alleged muti
usage.
A number of local football incidents have also dominated headlines, with teams
breaking the rules in fear of muti usage.
On Wednesday, a Zambian freelance journalist working for the Lusaka Times, Sath
Kaira, questioned Young Buffaloes head coach Dominic Kunene, on why the local
teams seemed to be obsessed with muti usage in football games.
Kaira even cited the issue of Swallows’ game against Simba in Tanzania, on the
scare of muti after the sprinkled substance.
This was during a post-match press briefing at the Mavuso Sports Centre
following Buffaloes’ 2-3 defeat in the hands of Zambia’s Green Eagles in
their Total CAF Confederation preliminary round, second leg fixture where the
latter proceeded to the first round on 5-2 aggregate.
“Why are Swazi (Eswatini) teams obsessed with the use of muti in football?”
the female Zambian freelancer asked Kunene.
“Even with Mbabane Swallows in Tanzania recently where they went to play
against Simba Sports Club, issues of muti usage were reported,” she continued.
Ironically, the Buffaloes game had to be stopped by Botswana-born referee,
Tshepo Mokani Gobagoba, after his assistant and countryman Oamogetse Godisamang,
under unclear circumstances, sprained his ankle and could not continue with the
game and the fourth official had to fill-in for him.
Kunene did not want to entertain questions on the muti subject and chose to
distance himself from it.
“I cannot comment on that, our job as coaches is only to prepare players for
matches,” he said briefly.
